Summary

Three-dimensional (3-D) neuroendoscopy may shorten the learning curve for neurosurgery procedures, but it does not outperform traditional two-dimensional (2-D) scopes in accuracy or efficiency for complex tasks.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Medical Imaging
  • Surgical Technology

Background:

  • Traditional two-dimensional (2-D) neuroendoscopy has limitations due to a lack of depth perception.
  • Three-dimensional (3-D) neuroendoscopes offer potential improvements in visualization.
  • This study objectively compares 2-D and 3-D neuroendoscopy in a controlled laboratory setting.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To objectively compare the performance of 2-D and 3-D neuroendoscopes.
  • To evaluate the impact of visualization modality on task efficiency and accuracy.
  • To assess the effect on the learning curve in neuroendoscopy.

Main Methods:

  • Eight participants with varying levels of neuroendoscopy experience performed simple and complex motor tasks using both 2-D and 3-D endoscopes.
  • Task completion time and accuracy were recorded.
  • Participants were grouped into novice, beginner, and expert categories based on prior training.

Main Results:

  • Increased experience with 3-D neuroendoscopy correlated with reduced inaccuracy in simple tasks (e.g., spiral drawing, P=0.04).
  • No significant differences in completion time for complex tasks requiring depth perception were found between 2-D and 3-D scopes.
  • The group that used the 3-D endoscope first showed significant improvement in 2-D scope use for simple tasks (e.g., dotted-line drawing, P=0.002), suggesting a shortened learning curve.

Conclusions:

  • The study does not support the superiority of 3-D neuroendoscopy over 2-D neuroendoscopy in terms of overall performance.
  • However, 3-D neuroendoscopy may facilitate a faster learning curve for neuroendoscopic procedures.
  • This benefit appears independent of the user's prior experience with neuroendoscopy.
