Area of Science:

  • Dermatopathology
  • Histology
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Syringoma is a benign adnexal tumor.
  • Clear-cell syringoma is a rare histologic variant.
  • Clinically, it is indistinguishable from ordinary syringoma.

Observation:

  • This variant features cells with pale or clear cytoplasm.
  • Cytoplasmic clarity results from glycogen accumulation.
  • A strong association exists between clear-cell syringoma and diabetes mellitus.

Findings:

  • A case of clear-cell syringoma in a patient with diabetes mellitus is presented.
  • Electron microscopy revealed periluminal cells with intra- and extracytoplasmic multivesicular bodies.
  • Immunohistochemistry for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) showed CEA within and surrounding duct-like spaces in ordinary syringomas.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • The findings may help characterize the clear-cell variant of syringoma.
  • Understanding this association can aid in clinical diagnosis and management.
  • Further research into the pathobiology of clear-cell syringoma and its link to metabolic disorders is warranted.
