Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. Summary

This study reports the first case of rhabdomyosarcoma, a skeletal muscle tumor, found in a Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix). The tumor exhibited characteristic spindle cells and cross striations, confirming the diagnosis in this fish species.

Background:

  • Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm originating from skeletal muscle progenitor cells.
  • Understanding tumor development in fish is crucial for aquaculture health and conservation efforts.

Observation:

  • A raised, firm, pink mass (5 × 4 × 3 cm) was identified on the dorsolateral surface of a 2-year-old female Silver Carp.
  • The mass appeared to originate from the subcutaneous musculature of the fish.

Findings:

  • Histological examination revealed a tumor composed of densely packed spindle cells arranged in interwoven bundles.
  • Microscopic features included vesicular nuclei, nuclear pleomorphism, multinucleate giant cells, and eosinophilic cytoplasm with visible cross striations.
  • Masson's trichrome staining confirmed the presence of striated fibrils, consistent with rhabdomyosarcoma.

Implications:

  • This is the first documented instance of rhabdomyosarcoma in Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix).
  • The findings contribute to the knowledge of neoplasia in cyprinid fish.
  • This case highlights the importance of monitoring fish populations for neoplastic diseases.
