Background:

  • Understanding the distribution of nutritional intake data is crucial for accurate statistical analysis.
  • Many statistical methods assume data follows a normal (Gaussian) distribution.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the probability distributions of various nutritional components in undergraduate college students.
  • To determine if these nutritional data conform to a normal distribution.

Main Methods:

  • Collected three-day average nutrition data from 111 undergraduate students (ages 17-24).
  • Analyzed distributions of total energy, macronutrients (protein, fats, carbohydrates), cholesterol, sodium, vitamin C, and iron.
  • Compared computed distributions against the theoretical normal distribution.

Main Results:

  • Distributions for sodium (females) and cholesterol (females) significantly differed from normal.
  • Cholesterol and vitamin C distributions for males also showed deviations from normal.
  • Most other nutritional components' distributions were reasonably close to normal.

Conclusions:

  • Researchers must validate normal distribution assumptions before applying parametric statistical techniques.
  • Nonparametric (distribution-free) methods are advised when data distributions are not normal to ensure valid results.
