Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Surgical Simulation
  • Neurosurgery Training

Background:

  • Simulation training is increasingly vital in postgraduate medical education.
  • This study evaluates simulation's impact on neurosurgical instrument knowledge.
  • Focuses on instrument recognition and application for residents.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Assess simulation training's effectiveness for neurosurgical instrument knowledge.
  • Evaluate PeriopSim™ Instrument Trainer and PeriopSim™ for Burr Hole Surgery.
  • Determine impact on instrument recognition and utilization.

Main Methods:

  • Randomized controlled trial involving 18 first-year neurosurgery residents.
  • Utilized two simulation-based applications: PeriopSim™ Instrument Trainer and PeriopSim™ for Burr Hole Surgery.
  • Intervention involved game-based simulation for instrument learning and identification during simulated surgery.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements in total scores (p < 0.0005) and time saved (p < 0.0005).
  • Significant reduction in errors (p = 0.019) over three testing sessions.
  • Further performance gains observed with PeriopSim™ for Burr Hole Surgery.

Conclusions:

  • Simulation training with PeriopSim™ significantly improves neurosurgical residents' instrument recognition.
  • Repetitive training enhances instrument utilization and procedural performance.
  • Virtual simulation is an effective tool for surgical instrument education.
