Deprivation and triage category in children
Insights
This study examined the link between socioeconomic status and emergency room visits for children. Findings reveal disparities in emergency care access for young patients based on deprivation levels.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Public Health
- Emergency Medicine
Background:
- Emergency department (A&E) attendance in children is a significant public health concern.
- Understanding factors influencing A&E use is crucial for resource allocation and healthcare planning.
- Socioeconomic status, indicated by deprivation, may impact healthcare-seeking behaviors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between deprivation category and triage scores among pediatric patients.
- To analyze the association between socioeconomic deprivation and first-time A&E attendance in children under 13.
- To explore how triage scores correlate with deprivation in pediatric emergency care.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective study design analyzing A&E attendance data over one year.
- Inclusion criteria: children under 13 with a postcode and triage score.
- Deprivation category determined by patient postcode; illness/injury severity by triage score.
Main Results:
- Analyzed 27,965 first-time pediatric A&E attendances.
- 94% (26,325) of cases had reliable triage categories documented.
- Data allowed for analysis of deprivation category, triage score, and A&E attendance.
Conclusions:
- The study establishes a methodology for linking deprivation data with A&E attendance and triage scores in pediatric populations.
- Results provide a foundation for further research into socioeconomic disparities in child emergency healthcare access.
- Further investigation is warranted to understand the implications of these findings for public health interventions.
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the relation between deprivation category, triage score and A&E attendance for children under the age of 13. A retrospective study of all children attending an A&E department over one year was designed and all children attending the A&E department who had a postcode and a triage score were documented on attendance. Over the 12 months studied, there were 27,965 patients registered as attending A&E for the first time, that is, true 'first attenders'. Of these 26,325 (94 per cent) had reliable triage categories allocated and documented. The postcode was used to determine the deprivation category and the triage scored the severity of illness or injury.

Specialized Care Centers and Settings-II
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...
