Summary

Oropharyngeal administration of colostrum to premature infants significantly increased serum immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels. This intervention shows promise for enhancing the immune defense of very low birth weight infants during their first month of life.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of oropharyngeal colostrum administration on serum immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels.
  • To assess these effects in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants during the first month of life.

Main Methods:

  • An unrandomized intervention study with a control group was conducted.
  • 38 VLBW infants (≤32+6 weeks gestation and/or <1500g) received 0.2 ml of maternal colostrum every 4 hours for the first 15 days of life.
  • Serum IgA levels were measured at birth, and on postnatal days 3, 15, and 30.

Main Results:

  • Serum IgA levels increased significantly in both the intervention and control groups over the 30-day period.
  • Infants in the intervention group demonstrated significantly higher serum IgA levels at one month of age compared to the control group (p=0.026).

Conclusions:

  • Oropharyngeal colostrum administration appears to enhance serum IgA levels in VLBW infants.
  • This method may offer a beneficial strategy for bolstering the immune system of vulnerable premature neonates.
