Area of Science:

  • Food safety assessment
  • Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
  • Allergenicity evaluation

Background:

  • European Commission approval is required for marketing genetically modified (GM) plants in the EU.
  • Safety assessments, including allergenicity, are mandated by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
  • Current allergenicity assessment guidance documents are undergoing revision.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To discuss methodological improvements for assessing the allergenicity of genetically modified plants.
  • To explore advancements in evaluating coeliac disease-causing properties of proteins.
  • To refine the existing system for allergenicity assessment of GM plants.

Main Methods:

  • An expert workshop was convened on June 17, 2015, in Brussels.
  • Discussions focused on improving in vitro digestion models for protein analysis.
  • Methodological advancements for assessing coeliac disease-triggering proteins were deliberated.

Main Results:

  • Identified areas for enhancing the assessment of protein allergenicity in GM plants.
  • Explored the utility of complex in vitro digestion models.
  • Proposed refinements to the established allergenicity assessment framework.

Conclusions:

  • Methodological improvements can refine the current system for GM plant allergenicity assessment.
  • Enhanced in vitro digestion and coeliac disease assessment offer potential advancements.
  • Revised guidance will strengthen the safety evaluation of GM foods and feeds.
