We describe two patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy affecting a single digit. Early diagnosis via blood flow scintigraphy and corticosteroid treatment led to disorder resolution.

Area of Science:

  • Pain Management
  • Neurology
  • Vascular Medicine

Background:

  • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), also known as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), is a chronic pain condition.
  • RSD typically affects an arm, leg, hand, or foot, but localized presentations are less common.
  • Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for effective management of RSD.

Observation:

  • Two cases of RSD localized to a single digit are presented.
  • Blood flow scintigraphy was utilized in one patient to support the diagnosis.
  • The diagnostic imaging also indicated early resolution of the condition in this patient.

Findings:

  • Both patients with single-digit RSD demonstrated positive responses to corticosteroid therapy.
  • Moderate doses of corticosteroids were effective in managing the condition.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The findings suggest a potential therapeutic role for corticosteroids in localized RSD.
  • Implications:

    • This case series highlights the possibility of RSD presenting in a single digit.
    • Early diagnostic tools like blood flow scintigraphy can aid in timely intervention.
    • Corticosteroid therapy may be a viable treatment option for localized RSD, warranting further investigation.
