Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

1.1K
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Cattell's 16 Personality Factors

3.0K
Raymond Cattell's trait theory offers a structured framework for understanding personality by distinguishing between two critical traits: surface and source traits. Surface traits are observable patterns of behavior, such as indecisiveness, anxiety, and irrational fears. These traits are less stable, varying across situations and over time. This means that they are less helpful in understanding the deeper aspects of an individual's personality.
In contrast, source traits are the...

Factorial Design02:01

Factorial Design

15.3K
Factorial Analysis is an experimental design that applies Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical procedures to examine a change in a dependent variable due to more than one independent variable, also known as factors. Changes in worker productivity can be reasoned, for example, to be influenced by salary and other conditions, such as skill level. One way to test this hypothesis is by categorizing salary into three levels (low, moderate, and high) and skills sets into two levels (entry level...

Binet's Contribution to Measures of Intelligence01:23

Binet's Contribution to Measures of Intelligence

1.9K
Alfred Binet, along with his student Théophile Simon, was tasked by the French Ministry of Education in 1904 to create a method for identifying students who struggled to learn through conventional classroom instruction. This initiative aimed to address overcrowding by placing such students in specialized schools. Binet and Simon developed an intelligence test comprising 30 tasks, ranging from simple commands, like touching one's nose or ear, to more complex tasks, such as drawing...

Summary

The Behavior Assessment System for Children-Second Edition (BASC-2) Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (BESS) Parent Spanish form shows promise for screening Latino students. While the factor structure is similar to the English version, some items function differently across languages.

Area of Science:

  • Educational Psychology
  • Psychometrics
  • Cross-cultural Psychology

Background:

  • Increasing diversity in U.S. schools necessitates culturally sensitive assessment tools.
  • The Behavior Assessment System for Children-Second Edition (BASC-2) Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (BESS) Parent Spanish form is a potential tool for behavioral and emotional risk screening in Spanish-speaking populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the psychometric properties of the BESS Parent Spanish form.
  • To examine the structural invariance and differential item functioning (DIF) of the BESS Parent Spanish form compared to the English version.

Main Methods:

  • Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to assess the factor structure.
  • Differential item functioning (DIF) analyses were conducted to identify item bias across language forms.
  • 725 Latino students (K-6) and their parents in an urban school district participated.

Main Results:

  • A 4-factor structure (Externalizing, Internalizing, Inattention, Adaptive Skills) was supported, consistent with the English BESS Parent form.
  • Differential item functioning (DIF) was found in 5 items (16.7%), with 4 items easier to endorse in English.
  • Preliminary evidence suggests partial invariance of the BESS Parent across language forms.

Conclusions:

  • The BESS Parent Spanish form demonstrates potential for screening Latino students.
  • Partial structural and item-level invariance exists, but DIF warrants further investigation for test bias.
  • Additional research is needed to confirm the psychometric integrity and minimize potential bias in cross-language assessments.
