Area of Science:

  • Forensic Science
  • Criminology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Homicide is a significant public health issue.
  • Understanding victim characteristics, such as alcohol consumption, can provide insights into homicide circumstances.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare homicide cases based on victim alcohol consumption.
  • To identify circumstances associated with alcohol presence in homicide victims.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 792 homicide records from Erie County, New York (1972-1984).
  • Logistic regression to determine factors associated with alcohol in victims' blood.

Main Results:

  • Alcohol was significantly more prevalent in victims who were male, aged 30-49, killed in warmer months, evenings/nights, in non-crime related incidents, stabbings, or in bars/restaurants.
  • High likelihood of alcohol in victims was noted for men killed at night, by women, Black males, and during weekend nights.
  • Alcohol presence was higher during peak homicide periods.

Conclusions:

  • Victim alcohol consumption is linked to specific demographic and situational factors, including those promoting drinking and spontaneous altercations.
  • Alcohol may be a contributing factor in some homicide cases.
