Summary

Labyrinthectomy does not preclude cochlear implantation for hearing rehabilitation. This study shows a patient deafened by labyrinthectomy achieved successful auditory outcomes with a cochlear implant.

  • Intracochlear prosthesis (cochlear implant) rehabilitation is established for intact otic capsules.
  • The efficacy of cochlear implantation after otic capsule surgery, like labyrinthectomy, remains under-explored.

Observation:

  • This report details a case of a patient who became deaf following a transmastoid labyrinthectomy.
  • The patient subsequently received a cochlear implant for hearing restoration.

Findings:

  • Post-implantation performance was evaluated by comparing the patient to three other postlingual cochlear implant recipients.
  • Results indicate that prior labyrinthectomy is not a contraindication for successful cochlear implant outcomes.
