    Summary

    The modality effect in memory recall shows that changing stimuli enhance recency effects, especially when this information identifies the stimulus. Auditory stimuli yield stronger recency effects than visual ones.

    Background:

    • The modality effect describes the tendency to recall information presented auditorily better than visually, particularly for items at the end of a list.
    • Several hypotheses attempt to explain this effect, including precategorical acoustic storage (PAS), changing-state stimuli, and primary-linguistic coding.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of changing-state stimulus information in immediate serial recall.
    • To compare the recency effects of visual and auditory stimuli.

    • Four experiments were conducted using visual stimuli (colored rectangles with movement) and auditory stimuli (synthesized speech).
