    Diné (Navajo) culture traditionally honors men-women and women-men, including Carrie, a female-bodied man respected in his/her community. Carrie

    Background:

    • Diné (Navajo) culture has a long-standing tradition of recognizing and respecting individuals with multi-dualistic gender identities, referred to as men-women and women-men.
    • These identities are rooted in cosmological worldviews and are represented by supernatural prototypes in the Diné Origin Story.
    • Carrie, a female-bodied man, grew up within this accepting cultural framework, receiving support from family and community.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To highlight the traditional acceptance and integration of multi-dualistic gender identities within Diné (Navajo) culture.
