Background:

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant social problem with widespread negative consequences.
Minority stress frameworks suggest same-sex relationships may experience higher IPV rates compared to mixed-sex relationships.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the prevalence of five forms of IPV between same-sex and mixed-sex college student relationships.
To analyze IPV risk factors and experiences within diverse relationship structures.

Main Methods:

Secondary data analysis of a U.S. college student sample (N = 4,081).
Comparison of IPV prevalence (physical, sexual, psychological, injury, any type) between mixed-sex (n = 3,960) and same-sex (n = 121) couples.
Propensity score weighting used to control for confounding variables (e.g., sex, age).

Main Results:

Unweighted analyses indicated higher IPV perpetration and victimization in same-sex relationships, especially resulting in physical injury.
Post-weighting analyses confirmed these findings, maintaining statistical significance and effect size.
Results suggest same-sex relationships have increased odds of experiencing IPV with physical injury.

Conclusions:

U.S. college students in same-sex relationships exhibit a higher likelihood of both perpetrating and experiencing intimate partner violence resulting in physical injury.
Findings underscore the need for tailored IPV prevention and intervention strategies for individuals in same-sex relationships.
Propensity score analysis is validated as a useful method for studying IPV in diverse relationship contexts.
