Summary

Flow diversion is a safe treatment for carotid-ophthalmic aneurysms, with low risk of visual loss. Most aneurysms treated with flow diversion achieved complete occlusion, showing effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of flow diversion for carotid-ophthalmic aneurysms.
  • To assess visual, clinical, and angiographic outcomes after flow diversion treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 48 patients (50 aneurysms) treated with flow diversion from 2009-2015.
  • Analysis of visual outcomes, complications, stroke, hemorrhage, and clinical follow-up.
  • Angiographic assessment at 6 months, 1 year, and 3 years using angiography and MRA.

Main Results:

  • No permanent adverse visual outcomes were observed.
  • Complete angiographic occlusion rates were 64.9% at 6 months and 96% at 3 years.
  • One case of late intraparenchymal hemorrhage resulted in death (2.2% mortality).

Conclusions:

  • Flow diversion is a safe and effective treatment for select carotid-ophthalmic aneurysms.
  • The risk of visual complications is low with this endovascular approach.
  • High rates of aneurysm occlusion support the long-term efficacy of flow diversion.
