A patient with recurrent metastatic Ewing sarcoma (EWS) achieved remission with programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) blockade. This novel approach shows promise for EWS patients with poor prognoses.

  • Ewing sarcoma (EWS) is a rare bone and soft tissue cancer.
  • Recurrent or metastatic EWS carries a poor prognosis despite conventional therapies.
  • Genomic instability and PD-L1 expression in EWS suggest potential for immunotherapy.

Observation:

  • A heavily pre-treated patient with recurrent metastatic EWS was treated with PD-1 blockade.
  • The patient experienced significant clinical and radiological remission.

Findings:

  • This case report is the first to demonstrate the efficacy of PD-1 blockade in Ewing sarcoma.
  • PD-1 blockade can induce remission in patients with advanced EWS.

Implications:

  • PD-1 blockade represents a potential new treatment strategy for recurrent or metastatic EWS.
  • Further clinical investigation of PD-1 blockade in EWS is warranted.
  • This approach may improve outcomes for patients with poor-prognosis EWS.
