[Sciatica. Neurofibrosarcoma of the thigh].

Summary

A rare neurofibrosarcoma developed in the sciatic nerve of a 61-year-old patient, causing persistent sciatica. Despite surgical confirmation, the tumor led to fatal pulmonary metastasis within 17 months.

Background:

Sciatica, characterized by pain radiating down the leg, can stem from various causes, including nerve compression or tumors.
Neurofibrosarcomas are malignant tumors arising from nerve sheath cells, often associated with neurofibromatosis but can occur sporadically.

Observation:

A 61-year-old patient presented with a three-year history of left lower limb sciatica.
Clinical examination revealed a palpable tumor in the mid-thigh region.
Surgical exploration confirmed the presence of a sciatic nerve tumor.

Findings:

Pathological examination definitively diagnosed the tumor as a neurofibrosarcoma.
The patient developed pulmonary metastasis 17 months after diagnosis.
The case highlights a rare instance of primary sciatic nerve malignancy.

Implications:

This case underscores the importance of thorough investigation for persistent sciatica, especially when a palpable mass is present.
Early diagnosis and understanding the aggressive nature of sciatic nerve neurofibrosarcomas are crucial for patient management.
Further research into the optimal treatment strategies for such rare tumors is warranted to improve patient outcomes.
