Area of Science:
- Global Mental Health
- Public Health
- Trauma Psychology
Background:
- Limited mental health services in the Colombian Pacific disproportionately affect Afro-Colombian victims of violence.
- The Common Elements Treatment Approach (CETA) was implemented to address this gap.
- Characterizing the implementation process is crucial for improving interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe the implementation of CETA for Afro-Colombian victims of violence in Buenaventura and Quibdó, Colombia.
- To identify key factors influencing the intervention's process and outcomes.
- To inform future mental health strategies for vulnerable populations.
Main Methods:
- Case studies utilizing in-depth interviews with Lay Psychosocial Community Workers (LPCW), supervisors, and coordinators.
- Qualitative analysis to identify core categories related to implementation.
Main Results:
- Six core categories emerged: conflict/poverty effects, trauma severity, perceived CETA changes, LPCW characteristics/performance, cultural adaptation, and well-being strategies.
- Implementation is significantly impacted by the active armed conflict, economic crisis, and resource scarcity.
- LPCW performance and cultural appropriateness are key to CETA's effectiveness.
Conclusions:
- The Colombian Pacific context presents unique challenges for mental health intervention implementation.
- Strengthening institutional partnerships is essential for delivering effective mental health care to violence victims.
- Adapting interventions like CETA to the specific cultural and socioeconomic realities of Afro-Colombian communities is vital.
