Area of Science:

  • Pediatric cardiology
  • Echocardiography
  • Cardiac function assessment

Background:

  • Limited data exists on acoustic quantification (AQ) in pediatric populations.
  • This study aimed to establish normal AQ values in children.
  • Investigated age-related changes in left ventricular (LV) function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Determine normal acoustic quantification values in children.
  • Analyze age-dependent changes in left ventricular function using AQ.
  • Assess the utility of AQ in pediatric diastolic function evaluation.

Main Methods:

  • 137 pediatric patients (29 days to 18 years) with normal cardiac function were studied.
  • Acoustic quantification (AQ) analysis assessed left ventricular area changes from short-axis views.
  • Mitral inflow velocities (peak early E, peak late A) and E/A ratio were measured.

Main Results:

  • Left ventricular end-diastolic area (EDA) and end-systolic area (ESA) increased with age.
  • Fractional area change (FAC) decreased with age, indicating reduced systolic function.
  • Peak ejection rate (PER) and peak rapid filling rate (PRFR) declined up to age 10.
  • Atrial filling fraction (AFF) decreased and E/A ratio increased with age up to 5 years.

Conclusions:

  • Significant maturational alterations in LV diastolic properties were observed up to age 5.
  • Acoustic quantification (AQ) analysis proves valuable for assessing pediatric left ventricular diastolic function.
