National Endoscopy Quality Improvement Program Remains Suboptimal in Korea

Background:

• The National Cancer Screening Program (NCSP) aims to improve cancer detection rates through endoscopy.
• The National Endoscopy Quality Improvement Program (NEQIP) was established to standardize and enhance endoscopy quality.

Purpose of the Study:

• To evaluate the operational characteristics of the NCSP.
• To assess physician opinions and familiarity with the NEQIP.

• A survey was distributed to physicians performing esophagogastroduodenoscopy and/or colonoscopy screenings within the NCSP.
• The survey assessed endoscopy capacity, sedation practices, endoscope reprocessing, and views on the NEQIP.

• Over 90% of endoscopy units had screening endoscopy waiting times under 4 weeks.
• Endoscopy reprocessing was suboptimal, with 28% using unapproved disinfectants and 15-17% not following protocols.

Conclusions:

• The NEQIP's effectiveness is currently suboptimal in Korea.
• Improvements in endoscopy reprocessing quality and increased physician understanding of NEQIP criteria are necessary.
