Background:

  • Appendectomy is a frequent gastrointestinal surgery with ongoing efforts to improve techniques.
  • Traditional skin closure methods for appendectomy often result in poor cosmetic outcomes and patient discomfort.
  • Existing literature shows no significant benefit of separated stitches over intradermic stitches for appendectomy wound closure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy and safety of a unique absorbable intradermic stitch versus traditional non-absorbable separated stitches for skin closure in open appendectomy.
  • To evaluate differences in surgical time, wound complications, and cosmetic results between the two closure techniques.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective randomized controlled trial involving 208 patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis.
  • Patients were randomized into two groups: Group A (absorbable intradermic stitch) and Group B (traditional separated stitches).

  • This technique demonstrates reduced incidence of seroma and abscess compared to traditional closure, with comparable rates of dehiscence and superficial infection.
  • The intradermic stitch approach offers potential for lower healthcare costs and shorter hospital stays due to fewer complications.
