Background:

  • Children with severe specific language impairment (SLI) may experience co-occurring visual-motor integration (VMI) challenges.
  • Factors such as age, gender, and socioeconomic status were explored for their impact on VMI in children with SLI.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate visual-motor integration (VMI) performance in children with severe specific language impairment (SLI).
  • To examine the relationship between language abilities and VMI performance in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of 100 children (ages 4-14) with severe SLI enrolled between 2000-2008.
  • Standardized language and VMI assessments were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • 52% of children scored below -1SD on VMI, with 25% below -1.5SD.
  • VMI performance was not significantly affected by age, gender, or speech impairment, but socioeconomic status showed an inverse correlation.
  • Receptive language scores on the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals were the sole predictor of VMI performance.

Conclusions:

  • A subset of children with severe SLI exhibit VMI deficits.
  • Receptive language ability is the strongest predictor of VMI performance in children with SLI.
  • Multidisciplinary assessment and management, including VMI screening, are beneficial for children with poor receptive language skills.
