Summary

Bird eye injuries are rare but can cause severe vision loss. Prompt surgical repair and antibiotics can successfully treat corneal perforation from bird attacks, restoring vision.

Background:

  • Bird attacks on humans are infrequent, with few documented worldwide cases.
  • Attacks often occur in retaliation to perceived environmental threats or during nesting seasons.

Observation:

  • A 31-year-old male presented with acute left-eye trauma, including a corneal penetrating laceration and traumatic cataract.
  • Initial management involved surgical closure of the cornea, lens aspiration, and anterior vitrectomy.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent subsequent penetrating keratoplasty and intraocular lens implantation.
  • Vision improved from hand motion to 20/200 in the affected eye after treatment.

Implications:

  • Corneal perforation due to bird strikes is treatable with surgical intervention and antibiotics.
