Summary

Fast-response pressure sensitive paint (PSP) measures acoustic pressure fields with high spatial and temporal detail. Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) effectively analyze complex acoustic data, with DMD showing superior noise suppression and signal separation.

Area of Science:

  • Acoustics
  • Fluid Dynamics
  • Optical Measurement Techniques

Background:

  • Acoustic pressure fields are crucial in various engineering applications.
  • Measuring these fields with high spatial and temporal resolution is challenging.
  • Traditional methods often lack the necessary speed or detail.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To utilize fast-response pressure sensitive paint (PSP) for detailed acoustic pressure field measurement.
  • To compare advanced data analysis techniques for extracting spatial modes from noisy pressure data.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) against phase averaging.

Main Methods:

  • Application of fast-response pressure sensitive paint (PSP) with a high-speed camera.
  • Generation of continuous time records of acoustic pressure fluctuations.
  • Analysis of spatial modes using Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), and phase averaging.

Main Results:

  • PSP successfully captured spatial and temporal details of the acoustic pressure field.
  • DMD and POD proved robust for analyzing aperiodic and multi-frequency acoustic signals.
  • DMD demonstrated superior performance in noise suppression and spectral energy separation compared to POD and phase averaging.

Conclusions:

  • Fast-response PSP is a viable technique for high-resolution acoustic pressure field analysis.
  • DMD and POD offer advanced capabilities for extracting meaningful data from complex acoustic measurements.
  • DMD provides enhanced noise reduction and signal separation for multi-frequency acoustic environments.
