Background:

  • Sedentary behaviors (SB) are linked to chronic health risks and are increasing.
  • Understanding SB in visually impaired (VI) populations is crucial for targeted health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate SB habits in adults with VI.
  • To examine the relationship between SB and self-reported visual acuity (VA).

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study utilizing the Patient-centered Assessment & Counseling for Exercise (PACE+) Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire (SBQ).
  • Assessed time spent in nine distinct SB categories.
  • Analyzed data using means, frequencies, and 2x4 ANOVAs to explore differences by gender and VA.

Main Results:

  • 140 adults with VI participated (71 men, 69 women).
  • Most reported time spent on watching television (TV), traveling, and paperwork/computer work.
  • Significant differences in time spent reading and watching TV were observed based on visual acuity (VA).

Conclusions:

  • Individualized approaches are necessary for reducing SB in adults with VI.
  • Targeting specific SB based on VA may enhance intervention effectiveness.
  • Promoting programs that support SB reduction is essential for this population.
