Background:

  • Open-angle glaucoma (OAG) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.
  • Peripapillary choroidal thickness (PPCT) is a key anatomical feature in the optic nerve head region.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically evaluate the relationship between OAG and PPCT.
  • To determine if PPCT is significantly different in OAG patients compared to healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases up to January 2016.
  • A meta-analysis of 13 selected studies was performed using statistical software (Stata 14.0, Revman 5.3).

Main Results:

  • OAG patients showed a statistically significant reduction in average PPCT compared to controls (WMD = -24.07).
  • Significant PPCT reduction was observed in the superior and nasal sectors, but not in the inferior or temporal sectors.
  • No significant publication bias was detected in the included studies.

Conclusions:

  • Open-angle glaucoma is associated with significantly decreased peripapillary choroidal thickness.
  • PPCT, particularly when measured by optical coherence tomography, may serve as a valuable diagnostic parameter for OAG.
