Pathologic Fracture of Odontoid Process Due to Metastasis of Bronchial Carcinoma: A Rare Cause of Neck Pain.

Journal of the West African College of Surgeons·2026

Bilateral calcifying ischiogluteal bursitis, a rare condition, was successfully treated. Aspiration and corticosteroid injection provided rapid symptom relief for this gluteal pain disorder.

Area of Science:

  • Anatomy
  • Radiology
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • The ischiogluteal bursa is an anatomical structure located between the ischial tuberosity and gluteus maximus.
  • Ischiogluteal bursitis is an uncommon condition, often presenting as gluteal pain.

Observation:

  • A case study involving a 43-year-old female patient with bilateral calcifying ischiogluteal bursitis is presented.
  • The patient had no significant past medical history or buttock trauma.

Findings:

  • Radiographs revealed calcifying deposits within the ischiogluteal bursae.
  • Aspiration of the bursae yielded calcareous material.
  • Treatment with aspiration and local injection of betamethasone and lidocaine resolved the patient's symptoms.

Implications:

  • Calcifying ischiogluteal bursitis, though rare, is readily identifiable via radiography.
  • Aspiration combined with local steroid injections offers an effective treatment for symptom management.
