Acquired affective-evaluative value: conservative but not unchangeable.

F Baeyens, P Eelen, O Van Den Bergh

    Summary

Evaluative learning, unlike signal learning, is resistant to extinction. Counterconditioning effectively alters learned evaluative value, even without awareness, offering new therapeutic approaches for emotional disorders.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Cognitive Science
    • Behavioral Science

    Background:

    • Evaluative conditioning involves learning affective associations.
    • Previous research suggests evaluative learning is resistant to extinction, unlike signal learning.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To replicate and corroborate the extinction resistance of evaluative learning.
    • To investigate the efficacy of counterconditioning in altering acquired evaluative value.
    • To explore the role of awareness in counterconditioning effectiveness.

    Main Methods:

    • A within-subject design with 30 participants.
    • Contingent presentation of neutral stimuli with liked/disliked human face images.
    • Application of extinction and counterconditioning procedures.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Assessment of changes in affective-evaluative tone of neutral stimuli.
  • Main Results:

    • Neutral stimuli acquired affective-evaluative tone after contingent pairing.
    • Extinction procedures failed to alter acquired evaluative value, even with awareness.
    • Counterconditioning effectively modified acquired evaluative value.
    • Awareness of counterconditioning was not essential for its effectiveness.

    Conclusions:

    • Confirms the extinction-resistant nature of evaluative learning.
    • Highlights counterconditioning as a viable method for modifying affective associations.
    • Suggests implications for behavioral therapies targeting emotional disorders.
    • Reinforces the distinction between signal and evaluative learning.
