    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Oncology
    • Medical Diagnostics

    Background:

    • Positive surgical margins (PSM) in prostate cancer (PCa) significantly increase recurrence risk.
    • Accurate differentiation between benign and cancerous prostate tissue is crucial for effective treatment and patient outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of electrical impedance measurements in distinguishing cancerous from benign prostate tissue.
    • To assess the potential of Composite Impedance Metrics (CIM) for PCa detection.

    Main Methods:

    • An electrical impedance acquisition system with a microendoscopic probe was used to measure tissue bioimpedance across a frequency range (1 kHz to 1 MHz).
    • Data from 14 ex-vivo human prostates (23 cancerous, 53 benign measurements) were analyzed.

  • A support vector machine classifier with a radial basis function kernel was trained using CIM data.
  • Main Results:

    • Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in impedance properties between benign and cancerous prostate tissues.
    • The system achieved a maximum predictive accuracy of 90.79% using high-frequency CIM phase data.
    • Impedance properties varied significantly across different anatomical regions of the prostate.

    Conclusions:

    • Composite Impedance Metrics (CIM) are effective in differentiating benign from cancerous prostate tissues.
    • Electrical impedance analysis shows promise as a diagnostic tool for prostate cancer.
    • The findings align with known physiological and morphological differences between benign and malignant prostate tissue.
