Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate potential abnormalities in general iron metabolism in multiple sclerosis patients.
  • To determine if iron overload is indicated by specific biomarkers in MS.
  • To explore the relationship between iron markers, disease severity, and HLA-A3 antigen in MS.

Main Methods:

  • Serum ferritin, transferrin saturation, and red cell ferritin were measured in 31 female and 18 male MS patients.
  • These results were compared to 49 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.
