Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection01:26

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection

14.5K
The hosts' susceptibility to infection depends on several factors. The integrity of the skin and mucous membranes helps protect the body against microbial attacks. When the skin is altered, the chance of infection, limb loss, and even death increases.
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin...

Factors Influencing Microbial Growth: Osmolarity

1.3K
Osmolarity is the measure of solute concentration in a solution. It plays a critical role in determining water availability for organisms. Water moves across semipermeable membranes through osmosis, flowing from regions of lower solute concentration (more dilute) to regions of higher solute concentration (more concentrated). In high-solute environments, microbial cells lose water, leading to dehydration and inhibited growth. The extent to which water is available to microbes in such environments...

Guidelines for Writing Outcome01:11

Guidelines for Writing Outcome

4.2K
When developing expected outcomes for a patient care plan, the nurse should adhere to the following recommendations:
Patient outcomes reflect the patient's response to the goal rather than what the nurse aims to achieve. Terminology should be observable and measurable to avoid the reader's interpretation. The desired outcome should be realistic and achievable in the designated care timeframe. Expected outcomes should align with adjunctive therapies. The outcome should enhance care...

Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

812
Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Summary

Malignant external otitis (MEO) is a severe infection in elderly diabetics. Identifying risk factors like diabetes and facial nerve palsy is crucial for predicting poor outcomes and guiding aggressive treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Otolaryngology
  • Geriatrics

Background:

  • Malignant external otitis (MEO) is an aggressive infection impacting the ear canal and surrounding tissues.
  • Elderly patients with diabetes mellitus are the primary demographic affected by MEO.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical characteristics of patients diagnosed with MEO.
  • To analyze factors influencing patient outcomes in MEO cases.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of medical records for 88 MEO patients treated between 1990 and 2013.
  • Analysis of clinical features, laboratory results, imaging, and patient outcomes.

Main Results:

  • The most common symptoms included ear pain, ear canal swelling, and discharge.
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the predominant pathogen (61%).
  • Factors predicting disease-specific mortality included diabetes, facial nerve palsy, positive CT scans, and age over 70.

Conclusions:

  • Malignant external otitis has a poor prognosis.
  • The presence of multiple risk factors (diabetes, facial nerve palsy, positive CT, age >70) indicates a need for intensive, prolonged treatment.
