  • Pathology

Background:

  • Primary mediastinal liposarcomas are exceptionally rare tumors.
  • These tumors can present with symptoms like chest pain and dyspnea.
  • Diagnosis often involves advanced imaging and pathological confirmation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a rare case of primary mediastinal liposarcoma.
  • To describe the clinical presentation, surgical management, and outcome.
  • To highlight the challenges in managing recurrent mediastinal liposarcoma.

Main Methods:

  • Case report of a 63-year-old male patient.
  • Diagnostic imaging using enhanced computed tomography.
  • Surgical resection of the mediastinal mass.

  • Pathological analysis for definitive diagnosis.
  • Follow-up examinations to monitor for recurrence.
  • Main Results:

    • A 10x16 cm posterior mediastinal mass was identified.
    • Initial radical resection was successful with patient recovery.
    • Recurrence in the anterior mediastinum occurred 12 months post-surgery.
    • A second surgery was performed for the recurrent tumor.
    • Disease recurred again 2 years after the second surgery, leading to patient refusal of treatment and subsequent death.

    Conclusions:

    • Primary mediastinal liposarcoma is a rare entity with a potential for aggressive behavior and recurrence.
    • Multimodality treatment and vigilant follow-up are crucial for managing these rare tumors.
    • Despite surgical intervention, recurrence can occur, posing significant challenges in patient management and prognosis.
