[Leisure-time activity for patients with a psychotic disorder: audiobooks as a useful alternative to reading]
Background:
Psychotic disorders are frequently associated with reduced concentration. As a result, reading often becomes impossible for patients with a psychotic disorder.
Aim:
To ascertain whether audiobooks can take the place of reading as a leisure activity for patients with a psychotic disorder.
Method:
In a feasibility study we investigated whether patients suffering from a psychotic disorder found listening to audiobooks an enjoyable alternative to reading.
Results:
Fifteen out of 20 participants found listening to audiobooks to be a positive experience.
Conclusion:
When reading becomes impossible for patients with a psychotic disorder, audiobooks could be a useful alternative.
