Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Oculomotor Research
  • Visual Perception

Background:

  • Microsaccades are essential for vision, potentially optimizing image motion for processing rather than solely stabilizing the retina.
  • Understanding microsaccade patterns offers insights into the oculomotor system, visual perception, and attention dynamics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between microsaccades and heading perception.
  • To analyze microsaccade characteristics before and after heading direction responses.

Main Methods:

  • Subjects viewed an expansion optic flow simulating left or right heading.
  • Participants signaled perceived heading direction with a saccade.
  • Microsaccades were recorded during optic flow stimulation.

Main Results:

  • Correct heading perception was associated with longer, larger, and faster microsaccades.
  • Microsaccade rate showed modulation across the perception process.
  • The primary direction of microsaccades was opposite to the perceived heading.

Conclusions:

  • Microsaccades play a fundamental role in enhancing visual perception, particularly in building global spatial awareness.
  • The characteristics of microsaccades are linked to the accuracy and efficiency of heading perception.
