    Summary

    Stem cell therapy for Stargardt

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Regenerative Medicine
    • Retinal Diseases

    Background:

    • Stargardt's Macular Dystrophy (SMD) is a genetic retinal disorder causing progressive vision loss.
    • Stem cell therapy is being explored as a potential treatment for retinal degenerative diseases.
    • Subretinal delivery of autologous bone marrow-derived stem cells was administered to a patient with SMD.

    Observation:

    • Two months post-injection, the patient experienced a retinal detachment in the treated eye.
    • Initial treatment with a scleral buckle was unsuccessful, leading to recurrent detachment and proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR).
    • A pars plana vitrectomy with membrane peel and silicone oil tamponade was performed.

    Findings:

    • The retina remained attached five months after the vitrectomy.

  • Visual acuity improved from hand motion to 20/300 in the affected eye.
  • This case highlights the potential for retinal detachment and PVR following subretinal stem cell injection.
  • Implications:

    • Retinal detachment is a recognized complication of subretinal stem cell injections.
    • Prompt surgical intervention, including vitrectomy, can lead to retinal reattachment and potential visual recovery.
    • Further research is needed to optimize safety and efficacy of stem cell therapies for retinal diseases.
