Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Parasitology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Hydatid cysts, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, typically occur in the liver.
  • Intrabiliary rupture is a rare but serious complication of liver hydatid cysts.
  • This complication can lead to biliary obstruction and cholangitis.

Observation:

  • A rare case of intrabiliary ruptured hydatid cyst of the liver is presented.
  • The patient presented with symptoms suggestive of a liver abscess.
  • Diagnostic challenges in identifying the underlying parasitic etiology were noted.

Findings:

  • The intrabiliary rupture led to common bile duct obstruction.
  • Hydatid membranes and daughter cysts were found within the biliary tree.
  • Cholangitis and jaundice were significant clinical manifestations.

Implications:

  • Early recognition of intrabiliary rupture is crucial for appropriate management.
  • This condition can mimic other intra-abdominal pathologies, necessitating thorough investigation.
  • Understanding this rare presentation aids in diagnosing and treating liver hydatid disease effectively.
