Moxibustion in hospitals can pollute indoor air. Using old moxa wool and local exhaust ventilation effectively reduces harmful pollutants, unlike air cleaners, improving hospital air quality.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate indoor air pollutants during moxibustion in a hospital OPD.
  • To compare the effectiveness of different control strategies for moxibustion-related air pollution.

  • Measured indoor carbon dioxide (CO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), formaldehyde (HCHO), total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), PM10, and PM2.5.
  • Compared pollutant levels using alternative old moxa wools, local exhaust ventilation, and an air cleaner.

  • Burning old moxa wool significantly reduced gaseous pollutants (except aerosols) compared to fresh moxa wool.
