Background:

Nurses require standardized methods to assess informatics competencies.
Existing tools may not adequately address varying skill levels, from general nurses to informatics nurse specialists.
The need for validated instruments to guide curriculum development and professional role definition in nursing informatics is critical.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and pilot two self-assessment tools for evaluating nursing informatics competencies.
To provide a means for general nurses (TANIC) and informatics nurse specialists (NICA-L3/L4) to gauge their skill levels.
To facilitate the integration of informatics competency assessment into nursing education and practice.

Main Methods:

Development of the Technology Informatics Guiding Educational Reform (TIGER) nurse informatics competency (TANIC) tool for all nurses.
Development of the Nursing Informatics Competency Assessment - Level 3/4 (NICA-L3/L4) tool for informatics nurse specialists.
Pilot testing and evaluation of both assessment tools.

Main Results:

The TANIC tool contains 167 informatics items, while the NICA-L3/L4 tool includes 178 advanced informatics items.
Pilot results supported the utility and validity of both assessment instruments.
The tools have been successfully integrated into Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs.

Conclusions:

The TANIC and NICA-L3/L4 tools are effective for self-assessing nursing informatics competencies at different professional levels.
These tools have broad applicability, being adopted in academic settings (BSN, MSN, DNP programs) and professional practice (job descriptions for informatics nurses).
Dissemination through webinars and conferences has led to widespread adoption and requests for use by other institutions.
