Design Example: Designing Water Slide01:18

Design Example: Designing Water Slide

697
When designing a water slide, controlling the speed of water flow is crucial for rider safety while maintaining an exciting experience. As water flows down the slide, gravity causes it to accelerate, with its speed at the bottom depending on the height from which it starts. The higher the slide, the more potential energy the water has at the top, which is converted into kinetic energy as it descends, increasing its speed.
Bernoulli's principle determines the water's velocity along the slide....

Area of Science:

  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Health Informatics
  • Public Health

Background:

  • User-centered design is crucial for effective digital health tools.
  • Developing targeted smoking cessation resources for specific populations, like gay men living with HIV, is essential.
  • Previous approaches may not have adequately incorporated end-user feedback in website development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the utility of rapid prototyping in user-centered website design.
  • To collaborate with end-users in developing a peer-support smoking cessation website.
  • To gather specific user feedback from gay men living with HIV for website refinement.

Main Methods:

  • Employed rapid prototyping as an iterative design methodology.
  • Engaged in cycles of prototype building, end-user review, and refinement.
  • Collaborated directly with the target user group throughout the design process.

Main Results:

  • Rapid prototyping facilitated effective collaboration with end-users.
  • The iterative process successfully elicited feedback on user needs for a smoking cessation website.
  • User input directly informed the development of a peer-support focused website.

Conclusions:

  • Rapid prototyping is a valuable tool for user-centered website design, particularly in health.
  • This method proved effective in understanding and addressing the unique needs of gay men living with HIV for smoking cessation.
  • The developed website design is better aligned with end-user requirements due to the prototyping process.
