Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and severity of depressive symptoms in hospitalized patients with advanced cancer.
  • To understand the relationship between depressive disorders and other common symptoms experienced by these patients.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 196 hospitalized patients with advanced cancer.
  • The Edmonton Symptom Assessment System and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) were utilized for data collection.
  • Statistical analyses included chi-square tests, Wilcoxon rank-sum tests, and Spearman rank correlation.

Main Results:

  • 39% of patients (n=76) were diagnosed with depression (SDS ≥ 53).
  • Patients with depression reported higher frequencies and intensities of pain, drowsiness, nausea, poor self-perception, appetite loss, anxiety, dyspnea, and fatigue.
  • Depressive symptoms showed a positive correlation with other reported symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • Depressive disorders are highly prevalent and severe among hospitalized patients with advanced cancer.
  • Early identification of depressive symptoms is essential for timely intervention.
  • Addressing depression can significantly improve the quality of life for advanced cancer patients.
