Summary

Voluntary suppression of abnormal movements is possible in many disorders beyond tics. However, tics are more easily suppressed and for longer durations, suggesting suppressibility alone shouldn't classify movement disorders.

Background:

  • Voluntary suppressibility of abnormal movements is a known characteristic of tics.
  • This ability has not been systematically studied in other movement disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the voluntary suppressibility of movements in various neurological conditions.
  • To determine if movement suppressibility is a unique characteristic of tics or a broader phenomenon.

Main Methods:

  • 146 patients with tremors and dyskinetic disorders were evaluated.
  • Patients attempted to suppress movements through mental concentration.
  • The duration of voluntary movement suppression was recorded via videotaping.

Main Results:

  • 100% of patients with tics suppressed movements (avg. 2.5 min).
