Hepatitis01:25

Hepatitis

6
Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of the liver most commonly caused by hepatotropic viruses (A–E), though non-infectious causes such as alcohol and drugs also exist.Hepatitis AHepatitis A virus (HAV) is a non-enveloped RNA virus of the Picornaviridae family. It is primarily transmitted via the fecal-oral route, typically through ingestion of contaminated food or water. After ingestion, HAV enters the bloodstream through the oropharynx or intestinal epithelium and reaches the liver.

Structure and Function of Platelets01:18

Structure and Function of Platelets

4.5K
The cell fragments known as platelets are disc-shaped, with an average diameter of about 3 μm and a thickness of roughly 1 μm. They play a crucial role in the body's vascular clotting system, which also involves plasma proteins, blood cells, and blood vessel tissues.
Platelets are continually replenished, circulating in the bloodstream for 9-12 days before being removed by phagocytes, primarily in the spleen. A microliter of circulating blood contains between 150,000 and 450,000...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Mean platelet volume (MPV) was significantly lower in patients with acute Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection compared to healthy individuals. This suggests MPV may act as a negative acute phase reactant in HAV.

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Virology
  • Hematology

Background:

  • Hepatitis A virus (HAV) remains a global public health concern.
  • Mean platelet volume (MPV) reflects platelet activation and function.
  • The role of MPV in acute viral hepatitis requires further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between MPV and acute Hepatitis A.
  • To determine if MPV can serve as an acute phase reactant in Hepatitis A patients.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy-six patients with acute Hepatitis A and 41 healthy controls were analyzed.
  • Blood parameters including MPV, liver function tests (ALT, AST), and platelet count were measured.
  • Diagnosis of HAV infection was confirmed by anti-HAV IgM positivity.

Main Results:

  • MPV levels were significantly lower in the acute Hepatitis A group compared to the control group (p < 0.001).
  • MPV showed a correlation with platelet count (p < 0.05) but not with liver enzymes.
  • An optimal MPV cutoff of 9.75 fL demonstrated 69.7% sensitivity and 68.3% specificity in diagnosing acute Hepatitis A in children.

Conclusions:

  • MPV levels are significantly reduced in patients with acute Hepatitis A.
  • MPV may function as a negative acute phase reactant in acute Hepatitis A.
  • Further research is needed to understand MPV's role in inflammation and other viral infections.
