Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical safety and efficacy of a novel, noninvasive focused ultrasound device for renal denervation.
  • To assess the outcomes of renal denervation using externally delivered focused ultrasound.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty-nine patients underwent renal denervation using the Kona Medical Surround Sound System, with treatments optimized over three studies.
  • The final study utilized noninvasive duplex ultrasound for image-guided targeting and therapy delivery.
  • Safety and efficacy were assessed through clinical evaluations, MRI, and angiography at various time points post-procedure.

Main Results:

  • Renal denervation with focused ultrasound was well-tolerated, with no major safety concerns.
  • Significant blood pressure reduction was observed: -24.6/9.0 mm Hg at 6 months and -23.8/10.3 mm Hg at 1 year.
  • A high response rate (BP decrease >10 mm Hg) of 75% at 6 months and 77% at 1 year was achieved. Post-treatment back pain was the most common adverse event, resolving within 72 hours.

Conclusions:

  • Externally delivered, image-guided focused ultrasound renal denervation offers a safe and effective approach for reducing blood pressure.
  • The noninvasive nature and positive clinical outcomes warrant further investigation in randomized, sham-controlled trials.
