Summary

Vascular Nerve Grafts (VNG) promote faster nerve regeneration and initial functional recovery compared to non-vascularized grafts (NNG). While VNG improves axonal quality, long-term functional outcomes remain comparable between the two graft types.

Area of Science:

  • Regenerative Medicine
  • Neurosurgery
  • Biomaterials Science

Background:

  • Nerve regeneration is crucial for functional recovery after injury.
  • Vascular support in nerve grafts may enhance regeneration.
  • Comparing vascularized and non-vascularized grafts is essential for optimizing nerve repair strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish an experimental model for nerve regeneration using Vascular Nerve Grafts (VNG).
  • To compare the efficacy of VNG versus non-vascularized grafts (NNG) in promoting functional nerve recovery.

Main Methods:

  • Sciatic nerve dissection and autograft reconstruction in 20 male rabbits.
  • 10 rabbits received VNG, and 10 control rabbits received NNG.

  • VNG group demonstrated superior axonal organization and a higher number of regenerated axons at 30 days post-surgery.
  • Differences in axonal number became less significant by day 90.
  • Axon diameter and myelin thickness showed no significant improvement with VNG.

Conclusions:

  • VNG facilitates a faster nerve regeneration process and initial functional recovery.
  • While VNG enhances axonal regeneration quality, it does not significantly increase axonal number or improve long-term functional outcomes compared to NNG.
