    Background:

    • Critical thinking (CT) is essential for registered nurse (RN) clinical reasoning.
    • Reflective journaling is an educational strategy to foster CT development.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To explore the influence of reflective journaling on RNs' use of CT dispositions within a fellowship program.
    • To examine how RNs engage with CT dispositions during their initial fellowship period.

    Main Methods:

    • Descriptive qualitative study utilizing content analysis.
    • Analysis of journal entries from RNs in a fellowship program over 7 weeks.
    • Focus on seven key CT dispositions: inquisitiveness, systematicity, open mindedness, analyticity, truth seeking, CT maturity, and CT confidence.

    Main Results:

    • Two major themes emerged: CT development is a gradual process, and purposeful engagement with CT dispositions can prevent adverse patient outcomes.
    • Journal entries indicated that conscious use of CT dispositions guided RNs' learning.

    Conclusions:

    • Reflective journaling can support the development of CT dispositions in RNs.
    • The purposeful application of CT dispositions is linked to improved patient safety and enhanced individual learning for RNs.
