  • To describe the perceived impact of epilepsy on sleep in adults diagnosed in late adolescence or adulthood.
  • To examine the relationship between perceived sleep changes and overall life changes due to epilepsy.
  • To investigate the correlation between epilepsy-related sleep changes and total Life Changes in Epilepsy Scale (LCES) scores.

Main Methods:

  • A quantitative descriptive/correlational design was employed.
  • One hundred seventy-four adults diagnosed with epilepsy were recruited.
  • Data were collected using the Life Changes in Epilepsy Scale (LCES).

Main Results:

  • The average score for the sleep item on the LCES indicated a negative change in sleep quality (mean = 2.76, SD = 1.31).
  • A significant, strong positive correlation was found between sleep changes and overall life changes (Pearson r = .476, p < .0000).
  • A significant, strong positive correlation was also observed between sleep changes and total LCES scores (Pearson r = .620, p < .0000).

Conclusions:

  • Epilepsy can lead to perceived negative changes in sleep quality for affected adults.
  • These negative sleep alterations are significantly correlated with broader negative changes in overall life.
  • Findings support the need for clinical attention to sleep disturbances in epilepsy management.
