The outermost root cells have specialized structures called root hairs that increase the root surface, thus increasing soil contact. Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the degree of external apical root resorption (EARR) in patients treated with Damon self-ligating appliances versus conventional preadjusted appliances.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 52 patients was divided into two groups: Damon self-ligating (n=25) and conventional preadjusted (n=27).
  • Groups were matched for age, treatment duration, malocclusion type, and non-extraction protocol.
  • Root resorption was assessed using periapical radiographs and the Levander and Malmgren scoring system.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant difference in the degree of EARR was observed between the Damon self-ligating and conventional preadjusted appliance groups.

Conclusions:

  • Similar degrees of external apical root resorption can be anticipated following non-extraction orthodontic treatment with either Damon self-ligating or conventional preadjusted appliances.
