    Summary

Patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) exhibit elevated platelet aggregation, which normalizes after treatment with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This suggests TCM can improve RVO by modulating platelet activity.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Hematology
    • Integrative Medicine

    Background:

    • Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a significant cause of vision loss.
    • Platelet aggregation plays a crucial role in thrombotic events, including RVO.
    • The efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in managing RVO requires further investigation.

    Observation:

    • Patients with RVO demonstrated significantly higher maximum platelet aggregation (PAgT max%) compared to healthy controls.
    • Elevated PAgT max% was observed in 80% of RVO patients.
    • No significant gender-based differences in PAgT max% were found in the RVO group.

    Findings:

    • PAgT max% in RVO patients was significantly correlated with the condition (P < 0.01-0.001).
    • Treatment with TCM led to a reduction in PAgT max% in RVO patients.
    • Post-TCM treatment PAgT max% values approached those of normal controls.

    Implications:

    • TCM may offer a therapeutic approach for RVO by normalizing platelet hyperaggregability.
    • Modulating platelet function with TCM could be a strategy to improve clinical outcomes in RVO.
    • Further research into TCM mechanisms for RVO is warranted.
