Summary

An otolaryngology-specific database (CHEER) offers greater utility for research than general national databases (NAMCS/NHAMCS). CHEER provides sufficient data for reliable analysis, unlike NAMCS/NHAMCS, which lacks adequate observations for epidemiologic studies.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the feasibility of conducting otolaryngology research using the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) and National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS) databases.
  • To compare the analytical capabilities of NAMCS/NHAMCS with the otolaryngology-specific Creating Healthcare Excellence through Education and Research (CHEER) database.

Main Methods:

  • Parallel analyses were conducted on two datasets: NAMCS/NHAMCS and CHEER.
  • A fixed hypothesis regarding risk factors for sensorineural hearing loss in pediatric patients (0-21 years) was tested.
  • Six additional diagnostic queries were assessed for feasibility across all age groups.

  • An otolaryngology-specific database like CHEER provides added utility for research compared to general national ambulatory databases.
  • CHEER is a more feasible and reliable resource for otolaryngology epidemiologic and outcomes research.
